Blue Lagoon Resort & Hotels: Where to Stay Near the Blue Lagoon

Where to stay near the Blue Lagoon in Iceland in 2026. Compare Silica Hotel, The Retreat, Northern Light Inn, Grindavík, Keflavík and Reykjavík for location, value and convenience.

Updated 3 October 2026

You do not need to stay at the Blue Lagoon to visit it.

For most Iceland trips, staying in Reykjavík and making a half-day visit is perfectly sensible.

But spending a night beside the lagoon can work extremely well if you want a slower spa experience, have an early or late flight at Keflavík Airport, or want the Blue Lagoon to be one of the main events of your trip rather than another stop on a sightseeing schedule.

There are two official Blue Lagoon hotels:

  1. Silica Hotel — the more approachable four-star option, with access to the private Silica Lagoon and Premium admission to the main Blue Lagoon included.
  2. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland — a high-end luxury hotel built around Retreat Spa, Retreat Lagoon and a much more exclusive wellness experience.

Immediately nearby, Northern Light Inn is the strongest independent alternative. It is not part of the Blue Lagoon resort, but it is close enough to make an evening or morning lagoon visit very easy.

You can also stay in Grindavík, Keflavík or Reykjavík, depending on what you are doing before and after the lagoon.

Quick recommendation: If you specifically want to sleep beside the Blue Lagoon, Silica Hotel is the best balance for most travellers. You get a private geothermal lagoon, Premium Blue Lagoon admission and breakfast without moving into Retreat-level pricing. Choose Northern Light Inn if you mainly want location for less. Choose The Retreat if the hotel and spa are the purpose of the trip.

Check Blue Lagoon Premium admission

This calendar is for Premium day admission to the Blue Lagoon. Silica Hotel guests already get Premium admission with their room, so only book this if you are staying elsewhere. Hotel rates in this guide are in ISK; the booking widget displays USD.

We may earn a commission when you book through our links, at no extra cost to you. Check the selected option’s price, inclusions and cancellation terms before paying.

Do you need to stay at the Blue Lagoon?

No.

This is the first decision to make before comparing hotels.

The Blue Lagoon is around:

  • 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport
  • 50 minutes from Reykjavík
  • close enough to the main airport route that it works well as an arrival- or departure-day stop

That means there is no need to move hotels purely to visit for two or three hours. A day visit with Comfort admission or Premium admission and a transfer covers it.

A Blue Lagoon hotel becomes worthwhile when the stay itself adds something you value.

Staying at the Blue Lagoon makes sense if…

  • the spa is a major reason for your trip
  • you are celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or birthday
  • you want access to a quieter hotel-only lagoon
  • you dislike rushing back to Reykjavík after bathing
  • your flight schedule works well with a Reykjanes Peninsula night
  • you want an intentionally slow first or final day in Iceland

Stay elsewhere if…

  • Blue Lagoon is just one stop on a busy itinerary
  • you are trying to control costs
  • you want restaurants, bars and nightlife nearby
  • you will spend most of the day sightseeing elsewhere
  • you have only one or two nights in Iceland

For a typical short Reykjavík break, we would not automatically move hotels just for Blue Lagoon.

For a honeymoon or spa-focused trip, the calculation changes completely.

1. Silica Hotel: best overall stay at the Blue Lagoon

Best for: couples, special occasions, first-time visitors who want a premium Blue Lagoon stay without Retreat pricing

Silica Hotel is the option we would recommend to the largest number of travellers who specifically want to stay at Blue Lagoon Iceland.

It is a four-star boutique property in the lava fields surrounding the lagoon.

The biggest advantage is not simply being close to the main Blue Lagoon.

A standard stay includes:

  • access to the private Silica Lagoon
  • Premium admission to the main Blue Lagoon
  • buffet breakfast
  • welcome drink
  • fitness centre
  • Wi-Fi
  • concierge service
  • a Blue Lagoon skincare discount

The official hotel information places Silica Hotel around 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport and 50 minutes from Reykjavík.

Silica Hotel prices in 2026

Official 2026 rates vary by season and room type. The rate card uses four seasons: winter/spring (5 January–31 May), summer (1 June–31 October), fall (1 November–18 December) and Christmas/New Year (19 December–3 January).

Lava Deluxe

  • Winter/spring: ISK 104,000
  • Summer: ISK 120,000
  • Fall: ISK 104,000
  • Christmas/New Year: ISK 130,000

Moss Deluxe

  • Winter/spring: ISK 112,000
  • Summer: ISK 130,000
  • Fall: ISK 112,000
  • Christmas/New Year: ISK 138,000

Silica Deluxe

  • Winter/spring: ISK 116,000
  • Summer: ISK 132,000
  • Fall: ISK 116,000
  • Christmas/New Year: ISK 140,000

These are official rate-card figures per room per night, based on two adults sharing.

Live consumer prices can vary by date, package and availability, so use them as a benchmark, not an exact quote for your stay.

What is included at Silica Hotel?

The 2026 package includes:

  • Premium admission to the Blue Lagoon — one admission per guest per night
  • access to Silica Lagoon
  • buffet breakfast
  • welcome drink
  • Wi-Fi
  • fitness centre
  • concierge service
  • 15% discount on Blue Lagoon Skin Science products during the stay
  • taxes and service charges

That makes the room price easier to understand.

You are not paying only for accommodation.

You are also buying a more private geothermal experience and Blue Lagoon admission that would otherwise need to be purchased separately — for comparison, Premium day admission starts from ISK 14,990 per person at the official rate.

What is Silica Lagoon?

Silica Lagoon is the hotel’s private geothermal lagoon.

It is separate from the main public Blue Lagoon and is reserved for hotel guests.

That gives Silica Hotel a major advantage over simply staying at a nearby independent hotel.

You can visit the main Blue Lagoon for the famous experience and then return to a smaller, quieter lagoon at the hotel.

For many people, that is the main reason to stay.

Is Silica Lagoon the same as the Blue Lagoon?

No.

Silica Lagoon is a separate hotel lagoon.

Your Silica Hotel stay also includes Premium admission to the main Blue Lagoon, so you can experience both.

This is important because some travellers assume that staying at Silica means they should skip the public Blue Lagoon.

We would not.

The two experiences complement each other:

Blue Lagoon for the iconic large lagoon and full attraction.

Silica Lagoon for a quieter hotel-only soak.

Is Silica Hotel worth it?

It can be.

The room rate is high, but the package makes more sense when you account for:

  • Premium Blue Lagoon admission for two
  • access to a private lagoon
  • breakfast
  • the convenience of staying on site

It becomes less compelling if you are primarily looking for a bed near Keflavík Airport.

In that case, you are paying for spa features you may barely use.

Silica Hotel is worth considering if…

  • you would buy Premium Blue Lagoon admission anyway
  • you want to spend substantial time bathing
  • you are travelling as a couple
  • you value a peaceful environment
  • this is your one luxury night in Iceland

Skip it if…

  • you will arrive late and leave early
  • you are visiting the Blue Lagoon for only two hours
  • you need a budget airport hotel
  • you want Reykjavík nightlife

2. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon: best luxury hotel

Best for: honeymooners, luxury travellers, milestone trips, spa-focused stays

The Retreat is not simply a more expensive version of Silica Hotel.

It is a different category of experience.

The hotel is built into the lava landscape around Blue Lagoon and centres on:

  • Retreat Spa
  • Retreat Lagoon
  • the Blue Lagoon Ritual
  • high-end dining
  • private wellness spaces
  • large luxury suites

The main Blue Lagoon is included as part of the wider experience, but it is not the reason most people spend this much.

The Retreat prices in 2026

Official 2026 starting rates are high.

Lava View Junior Suite

From ISK 230,000 per night

Moss Junior Suite

From ISK 230,000

Lagoon View Junior Suite

From ISK 280,000

Moss Suite

From ISK 315,000

Lagoon Suite

From ISK 440,000

Blue Lagoon Suite

ISK 2,500,000 per night

Summer rates are generally higher.

For example, the 2026 summer rate card lists Lava View and Moss Junior Suites at ISK 280,000, while Lagoon Suites reach ISK 540,000.

Most suite categories are designed around multi-night luxury stays: the 2026 rate card sets a two-night minimum for every suite except the Lava View Junior Suite, which can be booked for one night at a higher one-night rate (from ISK 250,000 in winter/spring).

What is included at The Retreat?

The exact inclusions depend on suite and package, but a Retreat stay is built around:

  • Retreat Spa
  • Retreat Lagoon
  • Blue Lagoon access
  • the Blue Lagoon Ritual
  • breakfast
  • luxury wellness amenities
  • fitness facilities
  • concierge service
  • high-end dining access

This is not simply a hotel beside the Blue Lagoon.

The spa is integral to the stay.

If you want a taste of it without staying the night, the Retreat Spa day visit with a private changing suite is sold separately; check the booking unit and guest count before comparing it with a per-person price.

What is Retreat Lagoon?

Retreat Lagoon is separate from the main Blue Lagoon.

It is woven into the lava field around the hotel and Retreat Spa and is reserved for Retreat guests and eligible spa visitors.

If your priority is privacy, this is a much bigger upgrade than moving from a standard Comfort ticket to Premium or Signature at the main Blue Lagoon.

Is The Retreat worth it?

It depends entirely on your budget and what you want from the trip.

For an ordinary Iceland sightseeing holiday, it is extraordinarily expensive.

For a honeymoon where you deliberately want one internationally recognised luxury spa stay, it can make sense.

The relevant comparison is not:

The Retreat vs a normal Reykjavík hotel

but:

The Retreat vs another luxury wellness resort anywhere in Europe

Choose The Retreat if…

  • you want the hotel itself to be a major trip highlight
  • you will use the spa extensively
  • you value privacy
  • you want high-end dining on site
  • you are celebrating something significant
  • the cost fits comfortably within your travel budget

Do not choose it just because…

  • you want to see the Blue Lagoon
  • you think standard Blue Lagoon admission is inadequate
  • you have an early flight
  • you need somewhere geographically convenient

You can have an excellent Blue Lagoon visit without staying at The Retreat.

3. Northern Light Inn: best nearby independent hotel

Best for: travellers wanting to sleep close to the Blue Lagoon without paying official resort-hotel prices

Northern Light Inn is the most obvious independent alternative.

It sits close to the Blue Lagoon and is designed around travellers using the lagoon and Keflavík Airport corridor.

The hotel has historically operated scheduled Blue Lagoon transfers for guests, making it much easier to visit without moving the car again after check-in.

Check the exact shuttle timetable for your date before relying on it, because local transport arrangements can change.

Why choose Northern Light Inn?

The main advantage is location.

You can:

  1. arrive from Reykjavík or Keflavík
  2. check into the hotel
  3. visit the Blue Lagoon
  4. return to your room without a long drive back to Reykjavík

That is particularly attractive after an evening Blue Lagoon slot.

It also works well before an airport day.

Is Northern Light Inn cheap?

Not necessarily.

Accommodation near one of Iceland’s most famous attractions still carries a premium.

But it is generally much cheaper than staying at Silica Hotel or The Retreat.

The right way to think about it is:

best-value hotel immediately near Blue Lagoon

rather than:

budget Iceland accommodation.

Northern Light Inn vs Silica Hotel

Choose Northern Light Inn if:

  • proximity matters more than private lagoon access
  • you want to spend less
  • you have already booked your own Blue Lagoon ticket
  • you primarily need a comfortable overnight stop

Choose Silica Hotel if:

  • the geothermal hotel experience itself matters
  • you want a private lagoon
  • Premium Blue Lagoon admission is useful
  • this is a special-occasion stay

4. Staying in Grindavík

Best for: travellers exploring Reykjanes, self-drivers and those wanting a local town rather than a resort

Grindavík is the nearest town to the Blue Lagoon.

When accommodation is operating normally, it offers conventional hotel and guesthouse choices and puts you in a useful position for exploring the Reykjanes Peninsula.

This area works particularly well if you want to combine:

  • Blue Lagoon
  • coastal scenery
  • lava fields
  • geothermal areas
  • Reykjanes viewpoints

The important caveat: volcanic conditions

Grindavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula have experienced repeated volcanic and seismic disruption in recent years.

Road access, services and accommodation operations can change.

If you book in Grindavík:

  • confirm the property is operating for your date
  • check current road access
  • monitor official Icelandic travel information
  • choose flexible cancellation terms where possible

Do not rely on an older hotel guide for current local access.

Should you stay in Grindavík for the Blue Lagoon?

Yes if you want to explore the peninsula.

Probably not if your only objective is visiting the Blue Lagoon and then returning toward Reykjavík.

For pure Blue Lagoon convenience, Silica Hotel, The Retreat or Northern Light Inn are easier.

5. Staying in Keflavík: best for early or late flights

Best for: arrival night, departure night, very early flight or late landing

Keflavík and Reykjanesbær sit around 20 minutes from the Blue Lagoon.

This can be the smartest place to sleep when your lagoon visit is at the beginning or end of your Iceland trip.

A good arrival-day plan

Keflavík Airport → Blue Lagoon → Keflavík hotel

This works well if you land during the day but do not want to travel into Reykjavík immediately. Without a car, a one-way Blue Lagoon transfer from Keflavík Airport covers the first leg; lagoon admission is separate.

The following morning you can start your road trip or head to the capital.

A good departure-day plan

Reykjavík → Blue Lagoon → Keflavík hotel → early flight next morning

This removes the stress of driving from Reykjavík before dawn.

Aurora Hotel: best for walking to the airport

Aurora Hotel sits directly across from Keflavík International Airport, roughly a 100-metre walk from the terminal.

That makes it one of the simplest choices before a very early departure.

You can visit Blue Lagoon the previous afternoon or evening, sleep near the terminal and walk to check-in the following morning.

This is primarily a logistics hotel, not a spa resort — which may be exactly what you need.

Courtyard by Marriott Reykjavík Keflavík Airport

The Courtyard is around 1.3 km from Keflavík Airport and approximately 20 minutes by car from the Blue Lagoon.

It offers:

  • modern rooms
  • restaurants
  • fitness centre
  • free parking
  • EV charging

It works particularly well if you have a rental car.

The hotel currently advertises a limited early-morning airport drop-off service for eligible Marriott Bonvoy guests, rather than a general all-day shuttle.

Check current conditions before building your airport plan around it.

Why stay in Keflavík instead of Blue Lagoon?

Choose Keflavík if:

  • your flight timing is the priority
  • you need more hotel choices
  • you do not need a private geothermal lagoon
  • you want to spend less than Silica or Retreat prices
  • you have a very early departure

Choose Blue Lagoon accommodation if the spa experience itself matters more than airport logistics.

6. Staying in Reykjavík: best for most visitors

Best for: first-time Iceland trips, short breaks and travellers wanting restaurants, nightlife and tour departures

Reykjavík is around 50 minutes from Blue Lagoon, but it remains the best base for a large proportion of visitors.

Why?

Because your hotel should serve the whole trip, not just one attraction.

Reykjavík gives you:

  • far more restaurants
  • bars
  • museums
  • shopping
  • tour departures
  • accommodation at many price levels

A direct Blue Lagoon transfer makes the distance easy to manage: compare a round-trip bus transfer with admission plus Reykjavík transfers, or read our Blue Lagoon from Reykjavík transport guide.

If your itinerary looks like this:

Day 1 — Reykjavík

Day 2 — Golden Circle

Day 3 — South Coast

Day 4 — Blue Lagoon

moving to a Blue Lagoon hotel may create more hassle than benefit.

Stay in Reykjavík if…

  • you want one hotel for the whole trip
  • you do not have a car
  • Blue Lagoon is only one activity
  • you want evening dining options
  • you are taking other tours from the city

Stay near the Blue Lagoon if…

  • the lagoon is a major priority
  • your flight timing makes it efficient
  • you want a special spa night
  • you have already spent enough time in Reykjavík

Silica Hotel vs The Retreat

This is the main on-site decision.

Choose Silica Hotel if…

  • you want a special Blue Lagoon stay but still care about value
  • a quiet private lagoon is enough
  • Premium Blue Lagoon admission meets your needs
  • you want a comfortable four-star hotel

Choose The Retreat if…

  • you want the full luxury experience
  • Retreat Spa and Retreat Lagoon are central to the trip
  • you want high-end dining
  • budget is secondary

The practical difference

Silica Hotel is roughly:

hotel + private lagoon + main Blue Lagoon

The Retreat is roughly:

luxury resort + private spa environment + Retreat Lagoon + main Blue Lagoon

For most travellers considering an on-site stay, Silica is the more rational choice.

Silica Hotel vs Northern Light Inn

This is perhaps the most useful value comparison.

Silica advantages

  • official Blue Lagoon property
  • private Silica Lagoon
  • Premium Blue Lagoon admission included
  • more immersive spa setting

Northern Light Inn advantages

  • generally much cheaper
  • very close to Blue Lagoon
  • easier to justify for a simple overnight
  • independent hotel atmosphere

If you would pay for two Premium Blue Lagoon tickets anyway, Silica’s apparent price premium becomes smaller.

If all you want is a nearby bed, Northern Light Inn makes more sense.

Blue Lagoon hotel vs Reykjavík hotel

Ask yourself one question:

What do you want to do after you leave the water?

If the answer is:

shower, eat quietly and go to bed

stay at or near the Blue Lagoon.

If the answer is:

go out for dinner, walk around town and continue sightseeing tomorrow

Reykjavík is usually better.

Blue Lagoon hotel vs Keflavík hotel

This comes down to spa immersion versus flight logistics.

Stay at Blue Lagoon if…

  • you want more bathing time
  • you want the resort atmosphere
  • price is less important

Stay in Keflavík if…

  • your flight is the next morning
  • you want more hotel choices
  • you do not need a private lagoon
  • airport convenience matters most

Is one night at the Blue Lagoon enough?

Yes.

One night can work very well at Silica Hotel if you give yourself time to use the facilities.

A possible itinerary:

Day 1 afternoon

Arrive and check in (check-in is from 15:00).

Late afternoon

Use Silica Lagoon.

Evening

Dinner and relax.

Day 2 morning

Breakfast and another quiet soak.

Late morning or afternoon

Use your included Premium admission at the main Blue Lagoon.

Afterward

Continue to Reykjavík or Keflavík Airport.

This gives you far more value from the hotel than checking in late, sleeping and leaving early.

Should you stay before or after visiting the Blue Lagoon?

If staying at Silica Hotel or The Retreat, build the Blue Lagoon visit around the hotel stay instead of planning the two separately.

For nearby independent accommodation:

Stay before if…

  • you have an early Blue Lagoon slot
  • you arrive at Keflavík the previous evening

Stay after if…

  • you booked an evening lagoon slot
  • you do not want to drive back to Reykjavík afterward
  • you fly early the following day

In winter, staying afterward can be especially appealing because it reduces late-night driving.

Best option for a honeymoon

The Retreat is the obvious luxury choice.

But Silica Hotel can be a much better use of money if Iceland itself, not the hotel, is the main focus of your honeymoon.

The price difference between one Retreat night and one Silica night can fund a substantial amount of:

  • fine dining
  • glacier excursions
  • helicopter flights
  • private tours
  • extra hotel nights

So do not assume that “honeymoon” automatically means The Retreat.

Choose based on how much of the trip you want to spend inside the resort.

Best option for families

Blue Lagoon hotel stays are designed primarily around wellness, with little in the way of family-resort entertainment.

The main Blue Lagoon allows children from age 2, but some Retreat experiences have higher age restrictions: the 2026 rate card sets a minimum age of 12 for Retreat Spa and Retreat Lagoon. Both hotels also keep children aged 8 or younger out of the rooms with direct water access (Silica Deluxe rooms at Silica Hotel, and the ground-floor suites at The Retreat).

Families should check:

  • minimum ages
  • room occupancy
  • direct lagoon access
  • spa age rules
  • whether their chosen package includes child admission

For many families, a conventional Reykjavík or Keflavík hotel plus standard Blue Lagoon admission is simpler.

Best option without a rental car

Three choices are particularly easy.

Reykjavík

Use a dedicated Blue Lagoon transfer.

Northern Light Inn

Check the hotel’s current local Blue Lagoon transport arrangements.

Blue Lagoon hotels

Arrange transport to the resort, then everything is on site.

Do not choose an isolated Reykjanes property just because it looks close on a map without checking transport.

Ten kilometres is trivial with a car and awkward without one.

Best hotel for Northern Lights

No hotel can guarantee the Northern Lights.

However, the Blue Lagoon area has less urban light pollution than central Reykjavík.

Silica Hotel, The Retreat and Northern Light Inn all sit in darker Reykjanes surroundings.

On a clear winter night with enough auroral activity, you may see the lights.

But hotel choice should not be based entirely on aurora potential.

Cloud can hide the sky no matter how expensive the room is.

Treat the Northern Lights as a bonus.

What about volcano views?

Do not book a hotel expecting to watch an eruption.

The Reykjanes Peninsula is volcanically active, but eruptions are unpredictable and access restrictions can change.

An operating hotel near the Blue Lagoon does not mean that every nearby volcanic area is safe or open to visitors.

Always follow current Icelandic authorities and road information.

How far are the main hotel areas from the Blue Lagoon?

Approximate travel patterns:

AreaTypical Blue Lagoon access
Silica HotelOn the Blue Lagoon property
The RetreatOn site
Northern Light InnVery short drive/shuttle
GrindavíkShort drive
KeflavíkAround 20 minutes
Keflavík AirportAround 20 minutes
ReykjavíkAround 45–50 minutes

Road and volcanic conditions can affect driving times.

Should you book the hotel before Blue Lagoon tickets?

If you choose Silica Hotel, Premium Blue Lagoon admission is already included according to the standard hotel package, so avoid accidentally buying duplicate admission.

If you choose The Retreat, the stay already includes extensive spa access.

If you stay at Northern Light Inn, Grindavík, Keflavík or Reykjavík, book your Blue Lagoon admission separately unless the accommodation package explicitly says otherwise. Our Blue Lagoon tickets and prices guide compares Comfort, Premium and Signature.

A sensible booking order is:

  1. decide where you want to sleep
  2. check what lagoon access is included
  3. buy only the missing admission
  4. arrange transport
  5. reserve restaurants if important

Does a Blue Lagoon hotel include airport transfers?

Do not assume so.

Accommodation and airport transfers are separate products unless your specific package states otherwise.

This is especially important with an expensive hotel: “on site” does not mean someone automatically collects you from Keflavík Airport. Our airport transfer overview covers the bus and private options.

Is there free parking?

The Blue Lagoon provides free on-site parking.

Nearby hotels also generally cater well to self-drivers.

If you already have a rental car, staying around Reykjanes is very straightforward.

Best stay for arrival day

If you land in Iceland and want a soft start:

Luxury

Silica Hotel

Airport → hotel → geothermal lagoon → sleep.

Practical

Northern Light Inn

Airport → hotel → Blue Lagoon → sleep.

Flight-focused

Keflavík hotel

Airport → Blue Lagoon → Keflavík hotel.

The last option is often best if you do not want to spend heavily on accommodation.

Best stay for departure day

If your flight leaves the following morning:

Best spa finale

Silica Hotel.

Best-value location near the lagoon

Northern Light Inn.

Best for a very early flight

Aurora Hotel at Keflavík Airport.

A useful itinerary is:

Reykjavík → Blue Lagoon → airport-area hotel → flight next morning

This prevents a common planning mistake: finishing a late Blue Lagoon visit, driving back toward Reykjavík, and then retracing the same route toward Keflavík only a few hours later.

Common hotel-booking mistakes

Paying for Silica Hotel but not using Silica Lagoon

The private lagoon is one of the main reasons the hotel costs what it does.

Buying separate Premium tickets when your Silica stay already includes them

Check your package first.

Choosing The Retreat because it is “the best”

It is the most luxurious, not automatically the best fit for your itinerary.

Staying near the airport when you want Reykjavík nightlife

Keflavík solves logistics, not city-break atmosphere.

Booking a non-refundable Grindavík stay without checking current conditions

Flexibility matters on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Assuming every “Blue Lagoon hotel” is at the lagoon

Search results can include properties many kilometres away.

Moving hotels for one short spa visit

Sometimes the best Blue Lagoon hotel is simply your existing Reykjavík hotel plus a direct transfer.

Which Blue Lagoon hotel should you book?

Best overall: Silica Hotel

The strongest balance of location, included admission and a different, private-lagoon experience.

Best luxury: The Retreat

Choose it when the wellness resort itself is a major part of the trip.

Best nearby alternative: Northern Light Inn

Excellent location without official Blue Lagoon hotel pricing.

Best before an early flight: Aurora Hotel

Walkable to the Keflavík terminal.

Best full-service airport option: Courtyard by Marriott Reykjavík Keflavík Airport

Useful for drivers and travellers who want conventional international-hotel facilities.

Best base for the whole trip: Reykjavík

Still the sensible choice for many first-time visitors.

Final verdict

You do not need to stay at the Blue Lagoon.

But if you decide to, choose a hotel because of what the stay adds — not simply because it is geographically close.

Silica Hotel is the sweet spot for most travellers willing to splurge. Its private Silica Lagoon and included Premium Blue Lagoon admission turn the stay into a geothermal experience in its own right, more than an expensive night beside an attraction.

The Retreat is on another level. It makes sense when luxury spa time is itself one of the main purposes of the trip.

Northern Light Inn is the practical alternative: close to the lagoon and easier to justify when you mainly want location.

If your priority is a flight rather than the spa, stay in Keflavík.

If your priority is the rest of your Iceland itinerary, stay in Reykjavík and visit Blue Lagoon as a day trip.

The most useful question is not:

What is the closest hotel to Blue Lagoon?

It is:

Where do I want to be before and after my Blue Lagoon visit?

Answer that first, and the right accommodation usually becomes obvious. If you are still weighing the Blue Lagoon against other spas, see our guide to the best hot springs in Iceland.
